Travelling as a family: children, elderly parents, wheelchairs and big luggage

Updated

Travelling as a family, the hard part is never the road. It is everything that comes with people and luggage together: whether the car actually fits everyone, whether there is a seat for the child, whether someone helps a grandparent in and out, whether three large cases will go in the boot.

Sorted in advance, none of it becomes a problem on the day. Here is each piece.

Sizing the car to people and bags

Enter the real passenger and luggage counts when booking — you do not need to work out the vehicle yourself. The system picks the smallest one that genuinely fits, and if one car will not do, it upgrades the class or adds a second, priced before you pay rather than raised on the day.

Standard SUV, seven-seat minivan and Luxury SUV are all available, and you can simply add vehicles.

Accurate figures matter both ways. If the counts entered do not match what turns up, that is on the booking; but if a car dispatched against accurate counts cannot take the load, the trip is refunded in full.

Child seats

Child seats are available. Request one when you book rather than mentioning it at the kerb — the seat has to be fitted to the car in advance.

Give the child's age when booking so we can supply the right type.

Can a child travel alone?

Yes, within firm rules. These are a legal obligation and are not negotiable:

The booking must be made by an adult. Passengers under 18 count as minors, and travelling unaccompanied requires written authorisation from a guardian.

Passengers under 14 are not carried unaccompanied at all; an adult must travel with them.

The authorisation and the handover arrangements are completed as part of booking, not agreed verbally at the door. Done in advance, the child is not turned away on the day.

Older passengers travelling alone

The chauffeur helps with belongings, assists getting in and out, and sees the passenger to the door at the other end.

Put the details in the booking notes — mobility, whether extra time is needed, which entrance to use at the far end. Written in advance beats explained on the day: the driver reads it before setting off.

For a parent travelling alone to a medical appointment, it is worth leaving a family member's number in the notes as well.

Wheelchair passengers

The chauffeur will assist you getting in and out of the vehicle.

If you need specialised equipment, please call to confirm first. Wheelchair equipment is not carried as standard; we arrange it against your specific requirements in advance and cannot promise it at short notice.

We would rather say this plainly up front. Discovering a mismatch at the kerb is the worst outcome for a passenger with limited mobility.

Oversized luggage

For skis, golf bags, instruments or a pushchair, note the dimensions when booking.

We size the vehicle by actual volume rather than piece count — a cello and a cabin bag are both 'one item' and occupy nothing like the same space. Dimensions in advance are what prevent a problem at the kerb.

Move-in loads and a full semester of boxes and bedding are handled the same way: the right vehicle, in one trip.

Questions about this guide

Do you have child seats, and should I request one in advance?

Child seats are available. Request one when booking and give the child's age so we supply the right type — the seat has to be fitted in advance, so it cannot be arranged at the kerb.

Can a child travel alone? What is required?

Yes, but the booking must be made by an adult. Passengers under 18 are minors and need written guardian authorisation to travel unaccompanied; under 14 we do not carry unaccompanied at all. The authorisation and handover arrangements are completed during booking.

My parent is travelling alone and is unsteady — can the chauffeur help?

Yes. The chauffeur helps with belongings, assists in and out, and sees them to the door. Put the details in the booking notes so it is arranged in advance rather than explained on the day, and consider leaving a family member's number too.

Can you take a wheelchair?

The chauffeur will assist you in and out of the vehicle. If specialised equipment is needed, please call to confirm first — it is not carried as standard and has to be arranged against your specific requirements.

Six of us plus luggage — will one car do?

Enter the real passenger and bag counts and the system picks the smallest vehicle that genuinely fits. If one will not do, it upgrades or adds a second, priced before you pay.

How do I travel with skis, a golf bag or an instrument?

Note the dimensions in the booking. We size the vehicle by actual volume rather than piece count — a cello and a cabin bag are both one item and take nothing like the same space.

Is there Wi-Fi, charging and water in the car?

Yes — Wi-Fi, bottled water, tissues and charging, at no extra charge. They matter most on long runs and with children aboard.

Price it for your group and luggage

Transparent pricing — you see the final price before you pay, with no hidden fees. The system generates your quote as soon as your trip details are in, and your trip is confirmed automatically once you pay online.
